About the work
As part of my studies into the software Houdini for the Dynamic Simulations module of the course, I chose to create a short VFX sequence showcasing a ship sailing on a rough ocean – trapped inside of a glass bottle, closely inspired by a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean.
My focus was to achieve a realistic ocean environment made up of separate simulations for the ocean, the mist, the white-water and the sails of the ship. Having no experience with Houdini at the start of the year I was more than sceptical of my ability to complete the project. Nonetheless I decided to throw myself in at the deep end and gradually developed the project over the course of the year.
Admittedly this was a very challenging experience and forced me to overcome a wealth of problems to eventually reach a result I was happy with. However, taking this approach enabled me to build a level of confidence with Houdini, which can be quite an intimidating software to learn, that I don’t believe I would have gained working on a tamer project. The teaching in lessons and feedback on the project by our tutor Wiktoria helped immensely and pushed me to achieve my best. After spending so much time learning this software, I’m excited to begin another project to keep building on my knowledge and to push the boundaries of what I’m capable of.
I’m now progressing onto the BSc (Hons) VFX Production Technology course for my final year studying at Confetti and I can’t wait to take on the next challenge. While I aim to remain open minded about job opportunities after graduation, I do plan to focus on lighting and effects artist roles as this is really where my passion lies.
I began my journey at Confetti by applying to study FdSc VFX Production Technology through Clearing after not achieving the A levels results I had hoped for.
However, I couldn’t be happier with where I am now. The balance between theory and creativity on the course has made the past two years of study both exciting and interesting, while still pushing me to achieve my best.
